WASHINGTON, March 12 (UPI) -- President Obama, working to defeat pessimism about the economy and annoyance with Washington, sank to a record low approval rating, a poll indicated Wednesday.
Obama's job approval dipped to 41 percent in March from 43 percent in January, results of the Wall Street Journal-NBC News poll indicated.
Fifty-four percent said they disapproved of the job he is doing, results shows.
The poll indicated a general dissatisfaction with all elected leaders in Washington and low regard for the Republican Party. About 25 percent of those polled view the GOP positively while 45 percent said they held negative views -- slightly weaker than views held for Democrats, results said.
Still, Republicans had a slight lead when the respondents were asked which party should control Congress, results showed.
Dissatisfaction with incumbents remains high, with only 34 percent saying their congressional representative deserved another term, compared with 55 percent who said they would rather give someone else a chance.
Fifty-four percent said they would vote to replace every member of Congress, including their own representative, if they had that option.
Results are based on national telephone interviews with 1,000 adults conducted March 5-9. The margin of error is 3.1 percentage points.
