CROSBY, Texas, March 5 (UPI) -- He's not the star quarterback, but Mike Ramirez is still taking the cheerleader to the prom.

Mike, a senior and a backup player on the varsity squad at Crosby High School northeast of Houston, reached out to Caitlyn, a cheerleader for the Houston Texans, to be his prom date if he could get 10,000 retweets.

“Honestly, I didn’t think she’d respond,” Mike, 17, said. “But, you don’t hit unless you swing.”

Caitlin said she was game, and after checking with the team and the cheerleader coach, agreed to go along.

"I thought it was the sweetest thing ever and I immediately said yes," she said.

Even though Caitlyn reached out on Twitter, Mike's friends didn't think their buddy stood a chance at reaching his 10,000-tweet goal.

"I thought she was going to blow it off because she's a Houston Texans cheerleader right?" said Colten Watley, a friend. "Yes, she's a professional and he's just a high school student,"

But Mike's tweet reached its goal -- thanks to a little help from some local radio personalities -- in less than 24 hours, and Caitlyn, 20, has said she'll follow through.

“I’m so excited,” Ramirez said. “My buddies are excited for me too. They said I have to do it big, so that’s what I’m going to do.”

Cosby High School's prom is scheduled for May 10 at the Museum of Natural Science in Houston. Mike says he plans on taking Caitlyn out to sushi, and a Houston limousine company has thrown in a complimentary Hummer limo rental for the big night.
