Hikers rescued from floodwaters in Southern California

CALABASAS, Calif., March 2 (UPI) -- Ventura County, Calif., rescue workers plucked four hikers from floodwaters in Malibu Creek State Park early Sunday, airlifting them to safety.

"It was dangerous for all involved, for the four hikers and [rescue] personnel ... because of the nature of the storm, the lack of visibility, the water levels at the creek," Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Deputy Crystal Hernandez told the Los Angeles Daily News. "The inclement weather made it very difficult to get to the hikers. A lot of safety precautions were made. Thankfully everyone came out OK and uninjured."

The hikers, all residents of Long Beach and 25 or 26 years old, were airlifted by a Ventura County Sheriff's Department helicopter after texting officials about their conditions and location, the newspaper said. All were checked out by medical personnel.

"They were on a rock surrounded by water," Los Angeles County Fire Capt. Roland Sprewell said. "They were just in kind of a bad place. ... They were in a place that they couldn't easily get out of there."
