WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Feb. 28 (UPI) -- A jury returned a not guilty verdict in the trial of Kerry Kennedy, who crashed her car driving under the influence of a sleep aid.

Kennedy, 54, has maintained she accidentally took Zolpidem, a generic form of Ambien, before getting into her Lexus and side-swiping a tractor trailer before exiting the highway, where she was found slumped over the steering wheel.

Kennedy said she had intended to take her prescription thyroid medication instead. At issue in the case was whether she should have known she was feeling the effects of her sleep aid, rather than her thyroid medication, while she was driving.

“To tell you the truth, anger is the last feeling I have right now,” she said, after the verdict was read. “I’m full of gratitude.”

Kennedy is the daughter of Robert F. Kennedy and the ex-wife of Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
