Detroit-area man guilty of killing four young women

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich., Feb. 28 (UPI) -- A suburban Detroit man was convicted Friday of killing four women whose bodies he left in car trunks, a case dubbed the Backpage.com murders.

A Macomb County Circuit Court jury found James C. Brown, 25, of Sterling Heights guilty of four counts of first-degree murder and six other counts. The jurors spent about 4 hours deliberating over two days before reaching their decision, the Detroit Free Press reported.

Brown faces life in prison when he is sentenced April 15.

The slayings were called the Backpage.com murders because Brown met all his victims through the classified advertising website. The victims -- Vernithea McCrary, Renisha Landers, Demesha Hunt and Natasha Curtis, all women in their 20s -- were found in the trunks of cars dumped in Detroit's blighted neighborhoods during a one-week stretch in December 2011.

Authorities said the four women were asphyxiated or suffered an asphyxiation-type of death.
