CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Feb. 28 (UPI) -- The father and stepfather of a kindergartner in Missouri were arrested after getting into a fight at a school performance, police said.

The incident happened Tuesday night at a kindergarten performance at Alma Schrader Elementary School in Cape Girardeau, Mo., the Southeast Missourian, Cape Girardeau, Mo., reported.

Following the performance, the men, identified as Ryan D. Steck, 36, and Kevin F. Alexander, 38, began arguing, Cape Girardeau Police Department public information officer Darin Hickey said Thursday.

Two off-duty officers also attending the performance managed to "immediately separate" Steck and Alexander after they began pushing and shoving each other, Hickey said.

One of the off-duty officers called the police, who arrived at the scene, arrested Steck and Alexander for peace disturbance, and released them.

Alexander said in a phone interview that he was reacting to Steck pulling his stepdaughter out of his hands. The girl complained that Steck's actions hurt her, he alleged.

"The worst part about it was it was in an elementary school around a bunch of kids," Alexander said.

Both men have been banned from further school functions.
