Three people killed, three injured in small plane crash in Hawaii

LANAI, Hawaii, Feb. 27 (UPI) -- A small airplane crashed minutes after trying to depart the Lanai Airport in Hawaii, killing three people and injuring three others, fire officials said.

Fire officials said the aircraft landed in brush and caught fire Wednesday, but the rescue attempt was hampered by the plane's remote location, KHNL/KGMB-TV, Honolulu reported.

Officials say the plane was visible because of the glow from the fire.

When emergency crews arrived, they found three people dead at the scene. Two others were critically injured and another was seriously injured.

A Maui Airport official said the aircraft was likely a private plane, KHNL/KGMB-TV said.

The victims' identities have not yet been released.
