ST. LOUIS, Feb. 27 (UPI) -- A police chase in Missouri resulted in a fiery crash and an exchange of gunfire Thursday that left one man dead, officials said.

Police tried to stop a Cadillac sedan around 2 a.m. near Lambert International Airport, but the driver refused to pull over, KTVI-TV, St. Louis, reported.

The vehicle crashed into a light pole near the airport and burst into flames. When police tried to approach the vehicle with fire extinguishers, someone inside the car allegedly opened fire.

One officer from the St. John Police department was struck by a bullet in his bullet-proof vest but was not seriously injured.

Police said there were two women and one man inside the vehicle, and the man died. One of the women was taken into custody and the other was transported to a hospital.

It wasn't clear if the man died from gunfire or from the crash.
