Las Vegas police to stop responding to minor traffic accidents

LAS VEGAS, Feb. 25 (UPI) -- Las Vegas police say they'll no longer respond to minor traffic accidents within their jurisdiction, freeing police officers to perform other traffic duties.

Starting March 3, officers will concentrate on traffic-law enforcement and other issues, instead of responding to accidents involving only property damage, the Las Vegas Sun reported.

Capt. Mark Tavarez of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said the department has 30 fewer traffic officers than it had 18 months ago and minor collisions take up time that could be focused on preventing accidents.

The new policy will not include hit-and-run offenses, accidents involving injuries or situations in which a driver in an accident refuses to provide insurance information, the Sun said Tuesday.
