The hoard of 19th-century coins was discovered as the Northern California couple were walking their dog last year and noticed the top of a decayed canister sticking up out of the ground. They eventually found eight cans containing the biggest hoard of gold coins ever found in the United States, the Chronicle said.
The couple, in their 40s and self-employed, are keeping their identities and exact location secret.
The newspaper said about 90 percent of the coins will be posted on Amazon.com's "Collectibles" site, probably in May, while the rest will be sold privately.
