Kerry: U.S. providing Nigeria with counter-terrorism assistance

Feb. 23, 2014 at 10:53 AM   |   Comments

WASHINGTON, Feb. 23 (UPI) -- U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry issued a statement Sunday condemning Boko Haram's recent attacks in Nigeria as horrific and wrong.

"Last Saturday, a brazen attack on the village of Izge, Nigeria, near the border with Cameroon took the lives of more than one hundred innocent people. Not less than a week had passed before Boko mounted another attack in Bama, setting 1,500 buildings ablaze, killing more than 115 people and leaving many others injured," the statement, released by the State Department, said.

Kerry said the United States supports Nigeria's efforts to investigate the attacks and punish those responsible.

The United States is providing Nigeria with counter terrorism assistance, the statement reads.

"We stand with the people of Northern Nigeria in their struggle against violent extremism," Kerry wrote.
