CEDARVILLE, Calif., Feb. 20 (UPI) -- A woman began shooting Thursday at a meeting to discuss evictions from a small American Indian settlement in California, killing four people, police said.

The shooting occurred in the Cedarville Rancheria Tribal Office and Community Center in Cedarville, a small community in northeastern California near the borders with Oregon and Nevada, the (Modoc County) Record reported. The alleged shooter, whose identity had not been released, was taken into custody.

Police said two people were wounded, one by gunfire and the other with a butcher knife the woman allegedly used after running out of ammunition.

Rancherias, found only in California in the United States, are small areas of land granted decades ago to the state's remaining Indian population. The Cedarville Rancheria, which dates from 1914, has 20 acres and the U.S. Census Bureau reported the population as 15 in 2010.

Police said the rancheria was holding a meeting on potential evictions. There are a total of five homes on the rancheria, two of them rented, the newspaper said.
