SPRINGFIELD, Mo., Feb. 20 (UPI) -- The Springfield, Mo., man accused of kidnapping and killing 10-year-old Hailey Owens won't be at his arraignment in person on Friday, court officials said.
Craig Michael Wood, 45, is scheduled to appear by video for his arraignment on charges of first-degree murder, child kidnapping and armed criminal action, the Springfield News-Leader reported.
Wood will remain in jail before and after arraignment after a judge agreed with a prosecutors' recommendation that the defendant be held without bond, the newspaper said.
"Defendant sought out a child victim, abducted her, and killed her," the bond document said. "Defendant is dangerous and there are no conditions of release which will protect the community."
A city-sanctioned candlelight march and vigil in Hailey's memory was scheduled Saturday.
Wood, a middle school coach and teacher's aide was arrested Tuesday and charged Wednesday in the shooting death of the 10-year-old girl, authorities said.
Greene County prosecutors allege Wood was responsible for killing Hailey, whose body investigators believe they found Wednesday in a plastic storage bin in Wood's basement, the Kansas City Star reported.
Wood is a seventh-grade football coach and a teacher's aide at Pleasant View K-8 School in Springfield.
Hailey attended Westport Elementary this year after attending Bowerman Elementary last year, and it appeared she and Wood did not know each other, investigators said.
Stacey Owens said her daughter was abducted Tuesday near her home. Witnesses told police they saw a man in a gold 2008 Ford Ranger drive down the street several times before the kidnapping.
