Hospital standoff ends in man's suicide

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Feb. 19 (UPI) -- Police in Massachusetts said a standoff outside a Springfield hospital ended when a husband suspected of shooting his wife turned the gun on himself.

A four-hour standoff ended shortly after midnight Wednesday when the unidentified 54-year-old man died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The incident began about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday when the man arrived at Baystate Medical Center's emergency room with his wife, who had been shot.

Police said the couple had been arguing and the man shot his wife, the Springfield Republican reported.

Distraught over what he had done, the husband drove the wife to the emergency room but never entered the hospital. Instead, when police arrived to question him, he locked himself inside his car and held a gun to his head.

The hospital was put on lockdown and specially trained crisis negotiators were brought in to try to talk to man down, to no avail.

There was no word on the wife's condition.
