Jury finds Florida man guilty on 4-of-5 counts in loud music shooting

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Feb. 15 (UPI) -- A jury in Florida Saturday convicted a man of killing an unarmed teen over loud music but found him guilty of attempted murder and a weapons charge.

The panel deliberated about 40 hours before reaching its decision that Michael David Dunn, 47, was guilty of three counts of second-degree attempted murder and a weapons charge. But the jurors were unable to agree on a verdict on a first-degree murder charge in the November 2012 shooting death of 17-year-old Jordan Davis and Duval County Judge Russell Healey declared a mistrial on that count, the Florida Times-Union reported.

Healey had handed them the case Wednesday evening.

Jurors had asked Healey Saturday morning, shortly after the day's deliberation began, whether they could return a unanimous verdict on some of the charges but not all of them, the Times-Union said. Healey said they could and jurors returned to their deliberations, reaching a decision on four of the five counts.

Dunn, a software engineer, killed Davis in a Jacksonville gas station parking lot after Dunn approached the vehicle the teen and three friends were sitting in, playing loud rap music.

Dunn claimed self-defense, saying Davis was verbally aggressive and threatened him after Dunn requested he turn down the music. Dunn said he thought he saw a shotgun barrel sticking out the window of the teens' car.

Police said no weapons were found in the vehicle.
