Former VP Walter Mondale recovering after heart surgery

ROCHESTER, Minn., Feb. 13 (UPI) -- Former U.S. Vice President Walter Mondale, whose wife died this month, was recovering after heart surgery at the Mayo Clinic, hospital officials say.

Mondale, 86, had the operation at the respected clinic in Rochester, Minn., Wednesday, the (Minneapolis) Star Tribune reported.

"Walter Mondale underwent successful heart surgery this morning at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester," CNN reported the clinic said in a statement. "He is resting comfortably and is expected to make a full recovery."

Details of the procedure performed were not provided.

The clinic said his family sought privacy, the newspaper said.

Joan Mondale, 83, died Feb. 3 after a period of declining health.

The former vice president served as U.S. ambassador to Japan, a U.S. senator and Minnesota attorney general. He also was the Democratic nominee for president in 1984, losing to Ronald Reagan.
