JEFFERSON CITY, Mo., Feb. 12 (UPI) -- Missouri state senators say they have given the nod to a measure that would nullify federal gun control laws and jail federal agents enforcing them.
The bill marks the second such effort by sponsor Republican state Sen. Brian Nieves after a similar bill pushed by him last year didn't get enough votes to override Gov. Jay Nixon's veto, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Tuesday.
Nieves' bill has addressed the major problems in last year's legislation, said Senate President Pro Tem Tom Dempsey.
The legislation would let some school personnel carry concealed weapons, but was amended Tuesday to require school districts to hold public meetings before allowing weapons in school. Districts also could permit certain school personnel to carry non-lethal weapons, such as pepper spray.
The bill also would allow gun owners with concealed-carry permits to openly wear their weapons, even in towns that ban open carry.
If passed, the bill will probably be challenged in court, as courts have said state law can't nullify federal law.
A second vote on the bill is required in the Senate before it moves to the House.
