ALEXANDRIA, Va., Feb. 10 (UPI) -- Police in Virginia are examining similarities between three homicides, leading some to suggest a serial killer is on the loose.

The latest killing took place Thursday when Alexandria resident Ruthanne Lodato, 59, was gunned down after answering a knock at the door about 11:30 a.m. A home caregiver was also shot but survived and described the assailant as an aging white bearded man with balding gray hair.

A second victim was gunned down in similar fashion in November and a third victim was killed in 2003. Police said all the shootings happened the same way -- a knock at the door in the late morning or early afternoon. None of the victims knew one another and all lived within two miles, ABC News said.

Alexandria Mayor William Euille cautioned the public not to jump to conclusions about a potential serial killer.

"Residents have a right to be concerned, but I don't want to characterize it that there is a serial killer floating around this city," Euille said.
