Woman denies she is fugitive who escaped prison in 1977

SAN DIEGO, Feb. 8 (UPI) -- A judge will decide whether a 60-year-old woman living in San Diego is really a former Michigan prison inmate who escaped in 1977.

Acting on a tip, police in San Diego went to a home to question a woman who identified herself as Jamie Lewis and produced government documents proving her identity. Still, officers remained suspicious due to holes in the woman's story and her striking resemblance to a mug shot from the 1970s of Judy Lynn Hayman -- who had served eight months of an 18-to-24-month sentence for trying to steal clothes from a Detroit-area store -- the Detroit News said Friday.

After extensive questioning, police said the woman admitted she really was Hayman.

But now, lawyers said she maintains she is not Hayman and plans to fight extradition back to Michigan.

A San Diego judge set a Feb. 18 hearing during which prosecutors will have to prove the woman is Hayman.
