FORT WORTH, Texas, Feb. 6 (UPI) -- A judge won't add jail time to the probation sentence for Texas teen Ethan Couch, who caused a car crash that killed four people and left 12 others injured.
Prosecutors had asked state District Judge Jean Boyd to impose a prison sentence on the 16-year-old, feeling the 10 years probation and addiction treatment sentences were not enough, the Fort Work Star-Telegram reported Wednesday.
During a hearing closed to everyone but the Couches, lawyers and the victims' families Wednesday, Boyd failed to set a minimum amount of time Couch must receive treatment for drug and alcohol use, said Eric Boyles, whose wife and daughter were killed in accident June 15.
Boyles said it will be up to the court and professional staff at the treatment facility to determine when Couch's treatment is complete.
"After six, seven, nine months, who knows, he walks out and is able to move on with his life," Boyles said.
In June, Ethan Couch was driving in his pickup truck with seven teenage passengers while intoxicated. He lost control of his vehicle, triggering a chain-reaction accident.
