Naked man attacks three people before shot by police; dies at hospital

DELRAY BEACH, Fla., Feb. 5 (UPI) -- A naked Florida man assaulted a retired police officer, bit another man in the face and then was fatally shot by sheriff's deputies, officials said.

Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said it wasn't immediately known whether the man died from gunshot wounds or from a medical condition, the Palm Beach Post reported Tuesday.

The incident began near The Colony at Delray Beach community when the naked man assaulted a retired New York police officer for no apparent reason, Bradshaw said. He was taken to a hospital.

The naked man then accosted a man and the man's 10-year-old son, Bradshaw said.

The nude assailant also fought with an 18-year-old, who defended himself with a box cutter as his face was bitten by the attacker, Bradshaw said. The teen was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the fight.

When they arrived at the scene, deputies tried to calm the attacker and unsuccessfully attempted to subdue him with a stun gun, Bradshaw said.

"He's obviously delirious on something," Bradshaw said. "He is a huge guy. He takes a fighting stance. They're trying to get him on the ground. He starts charging them. The [stun gun] did not affect him."

A sheriff's sergeant fired at the man, who died at a hospital.

"We don't know right now if he's expired from the gunshots, or if he's expired because of obviously he's on some type of drugs that have made him act like this," Bradshaw said. "There's no way to know if those are the shots that actually killed him, or if he's died from what they called exited delirium. He's obviously on some type of narcotics to make him act like this."
