The 18-hour hostage situation began Monday afternoon in a home in Arvada, a Denver suburb. Tuesday morning officers shot the suspect when he answered the door as they delivered breakfast to the home. Police then rushed in to get the boy, the Denver Post reported.

Police initially were summoned on a domestic violence call involving an argument between the suspect and his girlfriend. As police approached, the suspect fled to a nearby home, taking the teenage boy hostage, Wick said, adding the suspect and hostage did not know each other.

The hostage taker was identified by his sister as Don Pooley, 34.

Pooley had convictions dating to 1997 for aggravated vehicular theft, marijuana possession, drug paraphernalia possession, forgery and smuggling contraband in prison, the Colorado Bureau of Investigations said.
