170 become ill on Caribbean Princess ship docked in Houston

HOUSTON, Jan. 31 (UPI) -- More than 170 passengers and crew members aboard the Caribbean Princess cruise ship became ill in a suspected norovirus outbreak, health officials said.

Centers for Disease Control officials boarded the ship Thursday night after it returned to the Bayport Cruise terminal near Houston more than 24 hours sooner than expected, the Houston Chronicle reported.

Norovirus can cause acute gastroenteritis. The predominant symptoms reported by ill passengers were severe vomiting and diarrhea, a report from the CDC said.

It was the second suspected outbreak of the norovirus on a cruise ship this week and the third in a month.

Royal Caribbean's Explorer of the Seas ship docked Wednesday in New Jersey two days early after some 700 people on board became ill with gastrointestinal symptoms.
