WESTBURY, N.Y., Jan. 30 (UPI) -- Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice got the backing of Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, D-N.Y., as she announced Wednesday she will run for McCarthy's seat.
Rice told supporters and the news media that, like McCarthy, she will also fight for stronger gun laws, Newsday reported. The two women appeared together at a diner in Westbury.
"Carolyn has convinced me that when you get to Washington, you can get involved in as many issues that are relevant to your constituents," Rice added. "You're not pigeonholed by your background and what your past experience is."
Rice said she is also concerned with helping small businesses, ending sex trafficking and immigration reform.
McCarthy, 70, who is being treated for lung cancer, announced recently she is retiring after nine terms. She got into politics after her husband was killed in a mass shooting on a Long Island Railroad train.
