GRAND JUNCTION, Colo., Jan. 28 (UPI) -- Witnesses said Heather Jensen, on trial in Grand Junction, Colo., for the deaths of her two sons, lied repeatedly about the events of the day they died.
Jensen, 25, on trial for criminally negligent homicide, child abuse and false reporting, allegedly left sons William, 2, and Tyler, 4, unattended in her locked and running vehicle on Nov. 27, 2012, for as long as 90 minutes while she was in another vehicle, engaged in sex with a man she barely knew, prosecutors charged.
Her trial began last week, and Monday the court saw a videotape she made, explaining the vehicle's interior heating system to an investigator and saying she set the heating control on "medium high," which was not "to, like, roast or anything."
Colten Childers testified he met the boys when he and Jensen met near Colorado's Powderhorn ski resort. He said he and Jensen had sex in his pickup truck while the boys remained in Jensen's vehicle nearby, adding the boys never left their car seats. His remarks were contrary to Jensen's repeated statements to police the boys had played in the snow for a short time, the (Grand Junction, Colo.) Daily Sentinel reported Tuesday.
Jensen then left his vehicle to go to hers, where she found her children dead. Childers testified Jensen suggested he leave the area before emergency responders arrived.
Jensen later told investigators she initially lied to protect her relationship with another man.
Another witness, Treasa Marriott, a former friend of Jensen's, testified Jensen spent little time at the hospital with her son William, who died Dec. 3. Marriott said that, when a nurse asked if she was ready to suspend life support for the boy, Jensen responded she "wanted to go smoke first."
