3 dead in Colorado helicopter crash

SILT, Colo., Jan. 27 (UPI) -- A helicopter crashed in Colorado Monday, killing all three people on board, authorities said.

The Glenwood Springs Post Independent reported the pilot was Doug Sheffer, owner and chief pilot for DBS Helicopters. The Garfield County Sheriff's Office had not released the names of the other two victims, but the newspaper said one reportedly worked for Holy Cross Energy.

The accident occurred at 11:18 a.m. when the Bell LongRanger snagged a power line while conducting an aerial inspection of power lines.

"I've known Doug for a lot of years, since I first became sheriff," Sheriff Lou Vallario said. "He was certainly a top-notch pilot and good friend, and was instrumental in a lot of search-and-rescue efforts.

"Because of Doug we were able to rescue many people that we might not otherwise have been able to. He is definitely going to be missed."
