Mom charged with torturing toddler who died

NORTH MIAMI, Fla., Jan. 22 (UPI) -- A Miami-area woman has admitted beating her 3-year-old son savagely in the days before he died, police said.

Fafane Caze, 21, was charged with aggravated child abuse and torture Tuesday, hours after Ghanson Debrosse was pronounced dead, the Miami Herald reported. North Miami Police Maj. Neal Cuevas said doctors at Jackson North Medical Center believe the boy had been dead for three hours before an ambulance was summoned after 3 a.m. Tuesday.

"There were signs of abuse on every inch of his body, and he really suffered," Cuevas said.

Caze, when she was first questioned, allegedly told investigators the boy had been staying with relatives in Haiti until about two weeks ago and was injured there. But Cuevas said Ghanson had clearly been injured more recently as well as in the past.

"There were signs of his being burned -- his lips, his face, his fingers," Cuevas said. "Somebody is going to be held accountable for this."

Caze's other children, a girl, 4, and boy, 1, are now in the care of the Department of Children and Families.
