Remains ID'd as missing NYC autistic boy

NEW YORK, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- DNA testing confirmed a body pulled from the East River in New York City is that of an autistic teen who went missing in October, officials said.

The city's chief medical examiner said Tuesday the remains are that of Avonte Oquendo, 14. Police had suspected it was him based on physical evidence, CNN reported. The body was found with shoes and blue jeans that matched Oquendo's description when he first went missing.

His body was found in the East River off Queens near where he went missing, last seen walking in the College Park neighborhood by his school Oct. 4.

Officials said body parts began washing up on the river bank Thursday, the New York Daily News said.

The medical examiner has not yet determined the cause of death.
