Bats found in Air Force recruits dorm prompt vaccinations

SAN ANTONIO, Jan. 20 (UPI) -- More than 200 U.S. Air Force recruits will be vaccinated for rabies after bats were found in a dormitory at the Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, officials said.

So far, 45 recruits have received the first of five rounds of rabies vaccine shots, the San Antonio (Texas) Express-News reported Sunday.

No one was bitten but everyone living in the dorm will be vaccinated as a precaution, officials said.

"When he heard that there was a bat in the dorm, that's when all the alarm bells went off for us," said Col. Mark Camerer, head of Lackland's 37th Training Wing.

Airman Basic Kayla Hawkins, 20, said she was the first to discover the bats in the dorm.

"I was sleeping and I felt something hit the blanket on my stomach, so when I looked up there was a bat flying around right underneath the top bunk, and I'm on the bottom bunk, and it was just disoriented, and it kept falling and hitting my stomach," she said.

Hawkins said the whole experience was a bit unnerving.

"Then it flew away and started hitting the windows and the wall lockers," added Hawkins. "Honestly, it terrified me. I took my blankets and my dust cover and covered my entire body, including my head, and just laid there for probably about an hour before I had the nerve to get up and walk away."
