Snow falls on parts of Midwest while West Coast remains dry

CHICAGO, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- Winter weather struck the U.S. Midwest Saturday, with heavy snowfall in some areas, forecasters said.

Parts of Wisconsin and Michigan had around 6 inches of snow Friday night. AccuWeather.com said 14.5 inches was reported in blustery Giles, Wis.

The snow created some flight delays at major Midwestern airports overnight and was expected to reach the Pittsburgh area and Charleston, W.Va. Saturday night.

A band of snow flurries moved eastward off the Great Plains, with the promise of some accumulation in Chicago, Minneapolis and Indianapolis. Light snowfall was forecast for New York this weekend.

The western United States faced another dry day Saturday. Los Angeles was expected to hit 80 degrees with fire-weather warnings up in the mountains north of the city.

Experts said the sharp differences between the eastern and western halves of the country were a result of changes in the jet stream that occur every winter, CNN said.
