Utah police officer, family dead in apparent murder-suicide

SPANISH FORK, Utah, Jan. 17 (UPI) -- Police doing a welfare check on a Lindon, Utah, officer found him and his family dead in an apparent murder-suicide, officials said Friday.

Investigators said Joshua Boren, 34, who joined the small Lindon department in October, appeared to have shot his wife, their two children and his mother-in-law before taking his own life, the Salt Lake Tribune reported. The bodies were found in the family's home in Spanish Fork late Thursday.

Spanish Fork Police Chief Steve Adams said there was no suicide note. But he said the Borens had apparently been having trouble in their marriage and had separated for a short time recently.

Cody Cullimore, the police chief in Lindon, said that Boren, who had been a corrections officer with the Utah County sheriff's department for a decade, was hired last year after more than 70 people applied for a job. The chief described Boren as "a great officer -- very likable, very pro-active."

Boren's wife, Kelly, 32, was the finance director in Bluffdale City. Her mother, Marie King, 55, lived with the family.

Cullimore called Boren a devoted father whose son and daughter, Joshua, nicknamed Jaden, 7, and Haley, 5, were a familiar sight at the police station in Lindon.
