Pilot dies in small plane crash in New Jersey

MILFORD, N.J., Jan. 16 (UPI) -- A small plane crash in New Jersey resulted in the death of the plane's pilot, officials said.

The wreckage of the plane crash was found by rescue crews at about 10 p.m. Wednesday near the Delaware River in Hunterdon County, the Hunterdon (N.J.) Democrat reported.

The discovery came about four and a half hours after a report was made by someone in nearby Bucks County, Pa., who said they heard a low-flying plane that was in trouble and may have crashed.

At that time, authorities searched the Bucks County side of the Delaware River while trying to collect more information on the crash.

Crews "used all of the information they were getting and pulled it together," said Hunterdon County Prosecutor Anthony P. Kearns III. The crash did not result in a fire, Kearns said.

Rescuers received a tip when a resident report smelling fuel.

After locating the crash site, rescuers tried unsuccessfully to revive the pilot.

The pilot's name has not been released.

Kearns said the Federal Aviation Administration has been contacted and will assist in the investigation into the cause of the crash.
