OKLAHOMA CITY, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has been sent to a federal prison in Oklahoma where he will stay before his permanent assignment, a registry notes.
Kilpatrick is serving a 28-year sentence for racketeering and corruption, the longest sentence for a corrupt politician in the nation's history, the Detroit News said. Kilpatrick, 43, is scheduled to be held until Aug. 1, 2037.
He isn't the only high-profile inmate at the facility. Convicted Boston mobster James "Whitey" Bulger was sent there in December.
It likely will not be long before Kilpatrick leaves Oklahoma, though. He has requested to serve his time at a prison in Texas to allow his wife and three children to visit, to which the U.S. attorney's office and the presiding judge who oversaw his trial have agreed.
