Attorney says officer's shots will be justified in manslaughter case

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Sept. 17 (UPI) -- The lawyer for a Charlotte, N.C., police officer charged in the shooting death of an unarmed man said Tuesday the officer's actions will be justified in court.

Officer Randall Kerrick, 27, a Charlotte-Mecklenberg police officer, has been charged with manslaughter in Saturday's death of Jonathon Ferrell.

Ferrell, 24, crashed his car early Saturday and sought help at a nearby home. The resident called police, and officers responding said Ferrell ran at them when they arrived. One officer used a stun gun on him, which police officials say was non-working. Police said Kerrick then fired 12 times, hitting Ferrell 10 times.

The unidentified attorney told WSOC-TV, Charlotte, at a hearing Tuesday when all details in the case come out, Kerrick's actions will be justified in court.

Kerrick did not attend Tuesday's hearing.

The attorney of Farrell's mother Georgia, Christopher Chestnut, said he spoke with police and believes Farrell was not attacking the police officers, the Charlotte Observer reported Tuesday.

"He was running to them for help. He was not threatening anyone," Chestnut said of Farrell.
