10-year-old boy dies after being pulled from frigid Maryland pond

GAITHERSBURG, Md., Jan. 14 (UPI) -- A 10-year-old boy died Monday after he was pulled from a frigid pond in Gaithersburg, Md., authorities said.

Two other boys, ages 9 and 10, who were rescued just after 4 p.m. near the intersection of Diamondback and Reprise drives survived, WRC-TV, Washington, reported.

Neighbors told the TV station the boys often played on the pond when it was frozen, which it had been in the past week.

The boy who died had been in the water for about 40 minutes.

A meteorologist for the TV station said the water temperature was about 40 degrees.
