Woman mauled to death by dogs

HOUSTON, Jan. 6 (UPI) -- Police said a homeless woman in Houston was mauled to death by two dogs and an onlooker who tried to help was also attacked.

Police did not release the woman's name but residents in the south Houston neighborhood said she was a regular in the area, describing her as petite and in her 40s. The incident occurred around 2 a.m. Sunday when two men walking to a nearby store saw the woman on the ground with the dogs pulling and biting her. Witness Osby Pineles and a friend began pounding on doors asking for help when Pineles tried to rescue the woman.

As he did that, police said the dogs turned on him, knocking him to the ground and biting his arms and legs, the Houston Chronicle reported.

One of the dogs is described as a 1-year-old female pit bull weighing 30 pounds. It was caught immediately after the attack and an administrative hearing will determine the animal's fate. Police are still searching for the second animal and its owner.

Residents in the neighborhood said the pit bull had a history of biting people.
