HOUSTON, Jan. 4 (UPI) --
Former U.S. first lady Barbara Bush
thanked the staff at a Houston hospital as she was discharged Saturday following a six-day stay, a spokesman said.
Bush, 88, wife of former President George H.W. Bush, was admitted to Methodist Hospital Monday because of respiratory problems.
She was discharged Saturday, the Houston Chronicle reported.
"I cannot thank the doctors and nurses at Houston Methodist enough for making sure I got the best treatment and got back to George and our dogs as quickly as possible," she said.
During her time in the hospital, Bush's husband was a frequent visitor. President Barack Obama and former President Bill Clinton sent messages wishing her a speedy recovery.
Barbara Bush was diagnosed in 1988 with Graves' disease, an autoimmune disorder, and was treated in 2010 when the disease flared up.
