Aiken reportedly is "actively considering" a bid for the seat now held by Republican Rep. Renee Elmers and has consulted with political strategists, the Washington Blade reported Thursday.
It's unclear when the 35-year-old native of Raleigh might make a decision.
Aiken has reportedly talked to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, made phone calls and met with local political figures in Raleigh to gauge support for a potential political run.
He has also reportedly met with Betsy Conti, a strategist who has worked with former North Carolina Gov. Bev Purdue and former vice president and presidential candidate Al Gore.
Should he run, Aiken wouldn't be the only Democratic candidate for Elmers' seat. Keith Crisco, North Carolina's former commerce secretary, is expected to announce his candidacy Monday.
The filing deadline for the May 6 primary is Feb. 28.
Aiken finished in second place on "American Idol" in 2003.
