Idaho governor calls for state takeover of correctional center

BOISE, Idaho, Jan. 3 (UPI) -- Idaho Gov. C.L. Otter asked the state Board of Correction to prepare the Department of Correction to take over the now-privatized Idaho Correctional Center.

In a letter to Board of Correction Chairman Robin Sandy, Otter, a Republican, noted the goal "of consistent day-to-day operation is better served at this time by the State of Idaho taking a more direct management role at ICC."

The Idaho Correctional Center in Kuna has been operated since it opened in 2000 by Corrections Corporation of America, a business based in Tennessee. Financial issues surrounding the falsification of records for security staffing at the prison are in the midst of resolution between the state and the corporation, a statement from Otter's office said Friday.
