SEATTLE, Jan. 2 (UPI) -- Former U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates fractured his first vertebra in a fall New Year's Day but won't scale back his book tour, his office said Thursday.

Gates, 70, fell at his lakefront home in Washington state and was hospitalized overnight in Seattle. His memoir, "Duty: Memoirs of a Secretary at War," is set for a Jan. 14 release date by Knopf.

"Dr. Gates accidentally fell at his home in Washington state Wednesday evening and fractured his first [vertebra]. He was treated at hospitals in Mount Vernon and Seattle and is now back at home with his family resting comfortably," his office said.

"He is expected to make a full recovery and thanks the medical staffs of both hospitals for the excellent care they provided him. He looks forward to the release of his new memoir 'Duty' on January 14th, which he will be promoting wearing a neck brace."
