Man faces kidnapping, other charges in trip to Las Vegas to marry

BAKER CITY, Ore., Dec. 31 (UPI) -- A Moses Lake, Wash., man was jailed for allegedly forcing his girlfriend to drive with him to Las Vegas to marry, court documents said.

Thomas Martin Pfeiffer, 22, was arrested Friday at a Baker City, Ore., truck stop and charged with kidnapping, menacing, coercion, assault, harassment and unlawful use of a weapon, the (Baker City, Ore.) Herald reported Tuesday.

Pfeiffer and his girlfriend, Virginia Valdez, 23, were traveling in their car with their 22-month-old daughter Thursday when Pfeiffer announced they were heading to Las Vegas to get married, Baker City Police Chief Wyn Lohner said.

Valdez was reluctant to make the trip, but later told police Pfeiffer threatened her with a knife and refused to let her leave the car. She escaped Friday morning by leaving the car at a truck stop, lying on the ground and screaming until someone called the police, Lohner said.
