UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 30 (UPI) -- U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon named Swiss national Philippe Lazzarini to a senior humanitarian and development position in Somalia Monday.

Lazzarini will be the deputy to Nicholas Kay, a special representative of the secretary-general who heads the U.N. Assistance Mission in Somalia, the United Nations said in a release.

The U.N. Security Council established the Somalia mission in May to more effectively coordinate international support for Somalia's federal government, Ban's office said.

Lazzarini, who has had several U.N. positions in Somalia since March, will still work to bring together different U.N. agencies operating in Somalia to improve their efficiency and effectiveness, the non-government organization said.
