PACOIMA, Calif., Dec. 29 (UPI) -- A small plane struck a building while trying to land at a California airport Sunday afternoon and wound up in a used-car lot, authorities said.
Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department said the two men on board the Cessna 172 got out of the single-engine aircraft on their own were hospitalized in fair condition with non-life-threatening injuries after the 1 p.m. PST accident at Whiteman Airport in Pacoima, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Ian Gregor, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration, said preliminary information indicated the pilot was making his second attempt at the landing when the plane crashed, taking out power lines as it went down.
The Times said the victims' names had not been released, but the FAA said the plane, which was destroyed, was registered to John Rhodes of Northridge. The newspaper said it had been unable to reach Rhodes for comment.
The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash.
