NEW YORK, Dec. 25 (UPI) -- Former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer and his estranged wife, Silda, said in a statement Tuesday they are getting a divorce.

"We regret that our marital relationship has come to an end and we have agreed not to make any other public statement on this subject," the couple said in a joint statement released by Spitzer spokeswoman Lisa Linden, the New York Post reported.

Spitzer, 54, has been dating former spokeswoman Lis Smith, 31, who is currently New York Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio's chief spokeswoman, the Post said.

Spitzer resigned as governor in 2008 after admitting he routinely hired high-price prostitutes. He ran an unsuccessful campaign for New York City comptroller last fall.
