SALT LAKE CITY, Dec. 24 (UPI) -- Three skiers in Utah were rescued after being partially buried under an avalanche, escaping injury during the incident, officials said.

The avalanche happened about 11:45 a.m. Monday at the Alta Ski Area in Little Cottonwood Canyon, Alta spokeswoman Connie Marshall said. It was triggered by skiers above the three who were caught up in the slide, the Salt Lake Tribune reported.

One lift was shut down for a portion of the day after the avalanche and Marshall said officials continued to monitor snow in the area.
