Girl gets pre-Christmas autograph from President Obama

KAILUA, Hawaii, Dec. 24 (UPI) -- A 10-year-old Toronto girl got an early Christmas surprise Tuesday when President Obama signed her journal while vacationing in Hawaii.

The Christmas Eve encounter came while Obama was at Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe Bay for a morning workout. A group from Toronto told a press pool reporter at a nearby McDonald's restaurant they saw the president working out with free weights and shooting a few baskets, and that he then stopped to write in the journal of Kyrstin Lavelle, a 10-year-old girl in the group.

"To Kyrstin -- Dream big dreams!" Obama wrote before signing his name.

Kyrstin said she gave the president, who she described as "really nice," some flowers. She said Obama joked that he would give them to his wife and say he picked them.

The president then headed back to the first family's vacation home.
