Police seek information in theft of Texas historical items

LIBERTY, Texas, Dec. 19 (UPI) -- Museum officials say they're trying to determine the number of historic artifacts stolen from the museum home of former Texas Gov. Price Daniel late last week.

Police released surveillance video of a man they would like to interview after items, including a sword and an American Indian headdress, were discovered missing from the Jean and Price Daniel Home and Archives at the Sam Houston Regional Library in Liberty, the Houston Chronicle reported Wednesday.

"A variety of historical items were taken from the house," said said Cesar Garza of the Texas State Library. "Silver pieces, jewelry items, World War II mementos, as well as native American artifacts."

"The materials taken are of significant historical value," Garza said. "They were given to the state of Texas by former Gov. Price Daniel and his wife, Jean, and represent a part of the historical record of our state."

Daniel held more high state elective positions than any other Texan. His wife, Jean Houston Baldwin, was Sam Houston's great, great granddaughter.

Daniel built the house as a replica of the governor's mansion in Austin. The couple never lived there but filled it with memorabilia they had collected, the Chronicle said.

Liberty police said they want to talk to the man seen in the video walking around the library perimeter Dec. 12, the Chronicle said.

"We are looking for this person. We would like to talk with him to find out if he saw anything or knows anything more about the robbery," Detective Jennifer Bowles said. "We don't know if he is the thief. He may have seen someone else in the area."
