The al-Mulathamun Battalion was originally a part of al Qaida in Africa but founder and leader Mokhtar Belmokhtar created his own splinter group late last year. He has said an elite group of members will also be part of a group dubbed Those Who Sign in Blood. That organization was also dubbed a terrorist group.
The al-Mulathamun Battalion has claimed responsibility for an attack on a gas refinery in Algeria and twin suicide combings in Nigeria so far this year.
The terrorist designation makes it illegal for any U.S. citizens to do business or provide material support to the group and freezes any U.S.-held assets.
