Police say cyclist stuck to rear windshield of car that hit him

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Dec. 18 (UPI) -- A South Florida driver hit a bicyclist and drove 2 miles with the man wedged on his rear windshield before dumping his broken body by a trash bin, police say.

The driver allegedly went home afterward and took a nap, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported Tuesday.

The cyclist, James Camlin, 53, was listed in critical condition with a spinal injury that could leave him paralyzed, and a nearly severed ear, Fort Lauderdale traffic homicide investigator Jill Hirsch said in a report.

Axel Inostroza, 27, of Pompano Beach was arrested at a body shop where he had taken his 2003 Ford Mustang for repair. Police said Inostroza hit Camlin from behind Monday on a city street.

Camlin hit the Mustang's windshield, rolled over the roof and became stuck between the rear window and a spoiler. Inostroza was "fully aware of the crash" but did not stop, said police Detective DeAnna Greenlaw.

Inostroza kept driving, and then left Camlin behind a trash bin in a wooded area near his apartment, Greenlaw said. A landscaping crew discovered Camlin several hours later.

Investigators said Inostroza initially told them he hit a stop sign, but later admitted he had been drinking before he hit Camlin.

Inostroza has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident with injuries, tampering with evidence and attempted voluntary manslaughter. He was being held in lieu of $70,000 bond.
