BOSTON, Dec. 18 (UPI) -- More than 600 flights were canceled across the Northeast United States due to a winter storm that dropped 6 to 9 inches of snow, weather officials said.

Hundreds of flights were delayed Tuesday night, and travel on the major highways was slow, Accuweather.com reported.

The snow hit Boston during Tuesday's evening commute, and many accidents and spin outs occurred, the Boston Globe said, but no significant injuries were reported

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation sent out 2,700 pieces of equipment to dispense salt and de-ice during roads the storm.

Snowfall across the Northeast is up dramatically from last year so far, Accuweather.com said.

Philadelphia has seen 11.2 inches of snow in December, but only had 8.3 inches of snow for the entire season last year.

Albany has received 20.9 inches of snow. Last year at this time, less than 1 inch of snow had fallen there.

Temperatures are expected to rise this weekend, and rain is expected.

The storm system will bring snow to the Maritime Provinces of Canada Wednesday, Accuweather.com reported.
